BT says 100 per cent broadband can be done

[Computer Shopper] Monday 17th Nov

Following Stephen Timms' call to arms last week to bring the target for 100 per cent broadband coverage to 2005, BT has said it can be done.

Ben Verwaayen, BT Group chief executive, said: 'Working together we can roll out broadband to 100 per cent of communities by 2005.'

However, he cautioned: 'In some areas, market stimulation alone will not be sufficient to deliver broadband. We are critically dependent on public partnerships to stimulate demand and to intervene with support to get the exchanges enabled early and even to help reduce the triggers. This will be essential to deliver the benefits of broadband to every community.'

Prime Minister Tony Blair, addressing the annual CBI Conference in Birmingham, said: 'I welcome Ben Verwaayen's announcement this morning that BT is eager to work with us and local communities to broaden access. I share with him the vision of achieving 100 per cent national coverage by 2005.'

He described broadband as a 'key driver' to UK productivity, and had become 'integral to improving supply chains throughout the UK'.

Malcolm Bruce MP, Liberal Democrat, Shadow DTI Secretary, echoed Verwaayen in placing emphasis on the role of the public sector: 'Government has a vital role to play in achieving 100 per cent broadband coverage and it must provide support to push broadband availability to those remote areas of Britain the market cannot reach.'

BT has also extended its potential coverage today and set trigger levels for 2,300 exchanges that link two million homes and businesses. Thirty-two exchanges will be upgraded immediately.

Broadband connection is up and running

[Blairgowrie Advertiser] 6th Nov 2003

FOLLOWING successful efforts to get broadband technology to the Blairgowrie area, local computer services provider, Strathmore Computers of Leslie Street, are one of the first companies to embrace the benefits it has to offer.

Installed by local internet security expert David Armstrong of OnWire UK Limited, broadband means that Strathmore Computers now provide their customers with significantly faster access to the internet. Broadband enables instant browsing, high speed downloads, and access to new video and music media services.

Local business people can find out more about what broadband can do for their business and to try it for themselves at Strathmore computers open evening on Tuesday next week (November 11) between 5pm and 6.30pm.

Information about the evening is available from Denyse Ritz, managing director, on 01250 870444. Information about broadband security and free internet security audits on: systems are available from OnWire UK Ltd on 0777 622 7569.

Denyse explained that broadband represented an upgrade to an existing telephone line providing permanent high speed internet access with no additional call charges.
